Encyclopedias for Kids
February 6, 2023
What are you searching for today? Often times our kiddos are doing research but they end up on random sites that may not actually have well-sourced facts. Then they spend a lot of time on content that may or may not be true. Providing them with some foundational resources is always helpful, and what is more helpful than an encyclopedia?! This week we have two encyclopedia-style sites that are really helpful for basic research.
DK Find Out!

Our first site is DK Find Out! This site is a great place for elementary students to start researching. There are tons of visuals to help time find the topic they are looking for and each topic leads to others that are still all controlled by the same site. You are not linked to external sites. You can search specific content areas or topics of interest. There are also videos, quizzes and fun facts. This is a great site for student driven inquiry even at younger grades.
Fact Monster

Fact Monster is another loaded research site. It is full of information on all kinds of topics. This site has fewer images so it would be better for upper elementary or middle school research. There are facts and research for all content areas plus interesting information about the world. Note that there are more ads on this site and students have access to games. However, they seem to be age appropriate and might be great for use during free time. Students can explore and research independently on a site that is full of facts!
So, if you don’t have a large hard cover bound encyclopedia set in your room, these sites might be just what you need! Do some research and see what you find! Have a great week everyone!
