Measure Up! Fun Tools for Teaching Measurement

Hey teachers! Episode 219 of the Tech Tools for Teachers Podcast is all about measurement — a life skill that spans math, science, shop class, and beyond. This week’s tools help students strengthen their measurement skills through interactive games and challenges—no class set of rulers required!

RulerGame.net lets students practice reading rulers, thermometers, and other measuring tools through quick, timed challenges. Options include:

Inches and metric ruler games
Thermometer and temperature reading practice
Graduated cylinder, caliper, and triple beam balance simulations
Military time and money-counting activities

It’s a great way to reinforce practical skills, introduce different types of measurement, or provide extra practice through a choice board or at-home learning. Just note that the site includes ads, but they’re easy to close once the game begins.

The site Mr. Nussbaum Measurement Games offers educator-created math games designed to make measurement hands-on and fun. Highlights include:

Hot Chocolate Shop – Teaches liquid measurement with cups, liters, and milliliters (and marshmallows!)
Moving Day – Reinforces area and surface measurement
Horrendous Soup – Students create the grossest soup possible using grams and milligrams
Slope Game – Introduces geometry and rate of change through interactive play

Many activities are free, but you can upgrade for full access at a low annual cost. Each game lists grade-level alignment, making it easy to differentiate for students.

Revisiting a favorite from Episode 42, Marble Run lets students build virtual marble tracks by connecting cubes, ramps, and curves. It’s not strictly a measurement tool, but it teaches spatial reasoning and problem-solving—essential components of measurement and engineering thinking.

Pair virtual tools with real-world measuring activities in your classroom.
